Swedish video game group Embracer announced Thursday that it has reached an agreement to buy Middle-earth Enterprises, which notably holds the rights to products based on the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit sagas.
With this acquisition, the Swedish group will retain the rights to all derivative products (books, films, series, video and board games, amusement parks, etc.) of Tolkien’s famous works.
The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.
Embrace continues its momentum
Middle-earth Enterprises is a division of The Saul Zaentz Company, founded in 1976 by producer Saul Zaentz, winner of the Best Picture Oscar for ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’, ‘Amadeus’ and ‘The English Patient’.
The Embracer Group also announced on Thursday the acquisition of several game studios, including Tripwire Interactive and Tuxedo Labs.
Formerly known as THQ Nordic, Embracer had already announced in May the acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix, three North American development studios behind hit games like “Tom Raider” and Deus Ex.
In its quarterly report also published on Thursday, Embracer reported a turnover of 7.1 billion crowns (about 671 million euros), more than double that of the same period last year.
