It was with a minimalist tweet published at midnight Paris time (but 3:00 pm in California and this Tuesday 7 am in Japan) that Sony made the fans who were still awake shudder. A simple image of your long-awaited PS VR2 virtual reality headset and a message: “Available early 2023.”
For PlayStation gamers, this is not necessarily good news. The PS VR2 was expected for the Christmas season. But the shortage of components and therefore of PlayStation 5 available may have led Sony to postpone the launch to leave the field open to its console at the end of the year.
The Japanese brand is undoubtedly hoping to replenish PS5 stocks, an essential item for the purchase of its next-generation headset that will work hand-in-hand. It’s also the only compatible console, as the PS4 Pro doesn’t have enough power to run the second generation of PlayStation VR.
Deal with the PS5 shortage first
However, everything remains unclear for the future of PS VR2, with a release date still approximate. Since its official announcement in February and the presentation of its design, the Tokyo-based firm has dropped its information on its device over the months.
The headset will be equipped with new controllers with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers like in the DualSense controller of the PS5, renewed comfort and ergonomics, but also options to customize the gaming space. It will integrate 4K OLED screens that offer a refresh rate of 90 or 120 Hz for a smoother screen during gameplay and a wider field of view (110°).
However, the accessory will maintain its USB-C wired connection to the console much to the chagrin of gamers. However, now there will only be one cable instead of the case and multiple cables from the first version of the earphones.
The PS VR2 will support around twenty games at launch, including a virtual reality game set in the universe ofForbidden Horizon West or a variation of no man’s sky Y Living Dead.
There is still a great mystery to be solved: Sony has not yet communicated the price of the helmet that we expect to see fly beyond 500 euros. The information likely slipped into the curve of an upcoming PlayStation conference.
