A new badge will appear on Twitter. The app is testing an indication that someone has verified the phone number associated with your account. This method must allow the social network to guarantee that it is not a fake account, managed by a robot.
The company confirmed its experimentation on August 23, reports TechCrunch. She assures that this badge will help users find reliable information. The American site adds that the social network will provide its users with the ability to add context to their account.
The thorny issue of bots
This option was first introduced by application specialist Jane Manchun Wong on August 20. She shared on Twitter a screenshot of her profile with the mention specifying the verification of her phone number. For now, the scope of the test has not been specified by the company.
This badge joins the list of previous bookmarks already implemented by Twitter. There’s the certification badge for celebrity or journalist accounts, the robot icon for automated accounts, and the flag for government or state-affiliated accounts.
This approach is framed in a tense context around the presence of bots in the social network. In early July, Elon Musk ended his acquisition of Twitter. The billionaire’s main argument for giving up the application lies in the number of fake accounts registered on the platform. The head of Tesla and SpaceX refutes the announced participation of 5% of the bots present on Twitter, believing that there are many more. A trial will be held on October 17 to determine whether or not Elon Musk will be forced to go ahead with his acquisition.
