On TikTok, influencers boycott Amazon to support the strike of its employees

Dozens of TikTok stars have decided to cease all collaboration with Amazon as long as the company does not agree to the social demands of the employees of the online sales platform.

They want to bring down one of the largest companies on the planet. The collective of American activists Generation Z for change launched the “People Over Prime Pledge” in August, a campaign to raise awareness of the rights of Amazon employees championed by the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), the company’s employee union, reports the Washington Post.

Its objective is to pressure the management of the company created by billionaire Jeff Bezos to agree to the demands of its unionized employees: an increase in the minimum wage to $30, additional paid vacations, the right to breaks for employees as well as an end to the measures taken by Amazon to prevent its employees from forming unions to defend their rights.

To multiply the echo of these statements, Gen for Z has 70 TikTok influencers considered stars on the Chinese platform. These content creators, who have 51 million subscribers, have decided to put pressure on Amazon by now refusing to participate in campaigns or alliances with the online sales brand until the accepted ALU requests are met. Specifically, this means that they will no longer display affiliate links, talk about products purchased on Amazon, or update their storefront on the site.

For Amazon, a halt in the race for influence

This is a real setback for Amazon, as the company has worked in recent years to court and seduce influencers. In particular, by starting, in 2017, the Amazon Influencer Program, which allows content creators to monetize their work through product placement on Amazon. In addition, Amazon is also very present on social networks, in particular on TikTok, where the company regularly offers collaborations to young content creators to promote their products, but also the series on its Prime Video streaming platform.

The “People Over Prime” campaign could put a stop to these collaborations and the promotion of the multinational on these platforms.

More than 90 influencers

Not enough for Gen Z for Change Deputy CEO Elise Joshi, who, in response, indicated that other creators have joined the group, bringing the number of influencers to more than 90.
