Sony took advantage of Gamescom, the German video game fair that takes place this week in Cologne, to present its next most demanding game controller in terms of possibilities. For now, its price and release date have not been communicated.
The DualSense Edge has been whispered about for a long time, it’s official. The few seconds broadcast on Tuesday night during Opening Night Live, the presentation conference that opens the show, allowed us to appreciate its design, which is close to the current DualSense controller that accompanies the PlayStation 5. But the DualSense Edge advances some advantages, in particular the customization of the controls.
So the DualSense Edge takes up the fundamentals of the DualSense controller (haptic controls, adaptive triggers to adjust strength and offer different functions, integrated microphone, vibrations), in the same rounded white design, with a black back and a touch panel decorated with iconic PlayStation Symbols as a differentiating touch. Above all, it is enriched with customization options both at the hardware and software level.
Customizable controls at last
Wireless like its predecessor, the controller is more “Pro“to give the players”an in-game advantage when creating custom commands”. For PlayStation gamers, it will finally be possible to turn specific buttons on or off, or assign them different functions by setting them to create different profiles.
The DualSense Edge now adds paddles to the back to provide additional controls for gamers. These will be customizable to suit the type of game (shooters, action, adventure, etc.). The sensitivity of the two sticks can be adjusted according to the needs of the player, as well as the intensity of support or the angle more or less accentuated to obtain the desired movement.
But the great novelty is also the possibility of changing the sticks of the asymmetric sticks and the domes. Several sets of different replacement accessories (more or less short) would be provided, to satisfy all gamer profiles and allow the controller to be much more comfortable under the fingers. Also on the back, Sony will provide two sets of interchangeable buttons (half-dome or thumbsticks).
Inspired by the Xbox controller
These additions allow the DualSense Edge to be easily repaired by replacing different parts of the controller and thus avoiding the issues found on PlayStation 4 DualShock4 controllers.
This decision by Sony to diversify its DualSense range is also inspired by the competition. Xbox has long released a wide range of controllers, including the Xbox Elite Series and Series 2, controllers aimed at more experienced gamers, especially professional esports players, who want to push settings in detail and according to their needs.
We also find in the novelties many elements borrowed by PlayStation from Xbox, but also from other players in the sector such as Scuf. The accessories brand recently launched its Reflex and Reflex Pro, PS5 controllers equivalent to DualSense Pro, put up for sale at high prices (from 220 euros).
