Hard blow for Mark Zuckerberg. Launched deep into the metaverse since the announcement at the end of 2021 of his virtual reality world project, the Facebook kingpin has just suffered a first affront. Vivek Sharma, head of virtual reality platform Horizon, left the company last week, the US group announced, confirming information revealed by Reuters. Neither the interested party nor the company gave any reason.

Sharma came to Facebook in 2016 and was long in charge of Facebook Gaming and was the man behind the group’s vast metaverse site. In particular, he was in charge of designing the future virtual and social environment that Zuckerberg wanted. It is on him that fell above all the heavy task of making possible a platform that offered productivity and entertainment to attract the maximum number of users to his new world.
To do this, Sharma had launched the Horizon Worlds projects, to design virtual reality worlds, Horizon Workrooms (professional collaborative space for meetings) and Horizon Venues, which brings together the organization of virtual events.
Nobody knows if the departure of the boss of Horizon is linked to the rather disastrous consequences of the avatar shared by Mark Zuckerberg last week, which has become a laughingstock on the web. He later released a new, more elaborate avatar, promising “major updates to Horizon and more sophisticated avatars.”
This exit is, however, a first blow to a project that fails to seduce, despite the many efforts of Mark Zuckerberg and a change in the name of the group (now baptized as Meta) for the occasion. A new virtual reality headset will be announced in October to further convince the general public and reassure investors.
