Russia’s Gazprom said on Monday it has stopped gas leakage from three fragmented Nord Stream pipelines under the Baltic and it may be possible to continue pumping through the only remaining line.
The company said in a statement that the pressure on the three lines has been balanced and is working to reduce environmental risks.
Europe has launched an investigation after major leaks were found in Russia’s two Nord Stream gas pipelines, each with a double line. Germany, Denmark and Sweden said they believed it was sabotage.
Nord Stream 1 reported a significant pressure drop on both lines, possibly due to breakouts, while Nord Stream 2 reported a similar sharp pressure drop on line “A”.
Gazprom said that Nord Stream 2’s “B” line could still export gas to Europe if the decision was made to start deliveries.
Nord Stream 1 was fully functional before Russia reduced and stopped gas flow for the past six months due to non-payment in Russian rubles and technical problems.
But the recently completed Nord Stream 2 never went into operation as Germany, where the pipeline reaches the mainland, froze the permit process as Russia prepared to invade Ukraine.
“If the decision is made to start deliveries via line B of Nord Stream 2, natural gas will be pumped into the pipeline after the integrity of the system has been verified and verified by the supervisory authorities.”
