Ukrainian forces made their largest advance into the country’s southern region since the start of the war, breaking through Russian defenses and rushing along the Dnipro River on Monday, threatening the supply lines of thousands of Russian soldiers.

In a sign that Ukraine is strengthening on two fronts, Reuters saw columns of Ukrainian troops moving 300km northeast to reinforce the Lyman railway hub, which had restarted over the weekend, and advancing towards a holding point to put pressure on the Donbass area.

Kyiv gave little information about gains in the south, but Russian sources agreed that Ukrainian troops advanced tens of kilometers along the west bank of the river and recaptured several villages along the way.

This advance reflects Ukraine’s recent war-changing successes in the east, even as Moscow tries to raise the stakes by annexing territory, ordering mobilization, and threatening nuclear retaliation.

“The information is tense, let’s put it that way, because yes, there really has been progress,” Russian leader Vladimir Saldo, who is in the occupied areas of Ukraine’s Kherson province, told Russian state television.

“There is a settlement called Dudchany on the banks of the Dnipro River, and right there, in that area, there has been progress. There are settlements occupied by Ukrainian forces,” he said.

Dudchany is located approximately 30 km south of where the front was before advancing, marking the fastest advance of the war ever. infestation.

While Kyiv has not yet reported on developments, military and regional authorities have released some details.

According to a video released by the Ministry of Defense, soldiers from Ukraine’s 128th Mountain Assault Brigade raised the country’s blue and yellow flag in Myrolyubivka, a village between the old front and Dnipro.

Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, published a photo of Ukrainian soldiers covering a golden angel statue with their flag in a village he says is Mikhailivka, on the riverbank, about 20 km from the front.

Serhiy Khlan, a member of Kherson’s district council, also listed Osokorivka, Mykhailivka, Khreschenikvka and Zoloto Balka as villages that had been retaken or where Ukrainian troops had been photographed.

“This means that our armed forces are moving strongly on the coast of Dnipro, closer to Beryslav,” he said.

Reuters was unable to immediately confirm where the footage of the flags was recorded.
