Italy’s smallest and least populated region is considering importing nurses from Brazil to combat the shortage of health workers in its public health services.
Roberto Barmasse, Minister of Health for the Aosta Valley in the far north of the country, said the region has at least 116 doctors and 98 nurses, plus dozens of socio-sanitary operators, physiotherapists, laboratory technicians, radiology technicians and speech therapists.
According to him, “given the challenges of recruiting staff” in the Aosta Valley, the regional health system is considering the possibility of recruiting nurses from Brazil.
However, Barmasse did not elaborate on the project.
Located on the triple border with France and Switzerland, the Aosta Valley has a population of just over 100,000 and an area of almost 3,300 square kilometers, the equivalent of two municipalities in São Paulo. Besides Italian, the official language of the region is French.
Recently, Calabria, another region of Italy in the extreme south, announced a deal to import around 500 doctors from Cuba to fill gaps in its healthcare system.
