At least two people were killed and six injured in a knife attack on Thursday in Las Vegas, in the western United States, police said.
Authorities initially reported that the incident, which occurred around noon (16:00 GMT), left one dead and five injured.
Sheriff Joe Lombardo said in a brief statement to the media that the victims were “tourists and locals”. One of the victims died on the sidewalk of Las Vegas Boulevard.
Police said all the injured were taken to local hospitals. One of them died at the health center, which increases the death toll, while the other three are in critical condition.
Authorities launched an investigation into the case but did not reveal any names, ages or personal information about the victims.
“The first incident took place on the pavement and appears to have been unprovoked, there has never been a shootout before,” said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Detective James LaRochelle.
“The suspect is a 30-year-old Hispanic,” LaRochelle said. Authorities believe that this is not a city resident.
After the attack, the suspect fled the scene, but was caught and detained, the official showing footage from security cameras from the moment after the attack. The weapon used was a long blade.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police received a “report that he was stabbed with multiple victims in front of a casino on the 3100 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard.”
The crime scene, close to major entertainment venues such as Wynn Las Vegas and The Venetian, was cordoned off and a large police presence was seen around noon.
Footage broadcast on local television shortly after the incident showed the empty streets around Las Vegas Boulevard, as well as the action of paramedics responding to the victims.
