An advisor to the president of Ukraine criticized this Friday for having been granted the Nobel Peace Prize to Russian and Belarusian activistswho received the award together with the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties (CCL).
“The Nobel Committee interestingly understands the word ‘peace’ if the representatives of two countries that attacked a third country together win the Nobel Prize, “Mikhailo Podolyak wrote on his Twitter account.
“Neither Russian nor Belarusian organizations have been able to organize a resistance to the war,” he added. Volodymyr Zelensky’s adviserto ironically conclude that this year’s Nobel Prize is “Amazing”.
Other Ukrainian users of the social network voiced similar criticisms, expressing their disgust at what they perceived to be a decision of the Committee to reward the victims and the aggressors at the same time and to group the winners on the basis of a presumed shared identity.
For her part, the director of the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties (CCL), Oleksandra Matviychuk, was pleased with the award in a message in which she urged the United Nations to reform its structure and expel Russia, and highlighted the mobilization of citizens as an engine to change.
“I am pleased that the Center for Civil Liberties I run today received the Nobel Prize along with our friends and partners from Memorial and Viasna,” he wrote on his Facebook account.
Together with the CCL, the Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Belarusian Ales Bialiatski for his defense of democracy and the Russian organization Memorial, which has been collecting and verifying information on abuse and war crimes for decades.
