Three people died and at least 40 were injured in a traffic accident involving a tourist bus in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, yesterday. According to local newspaper Dominican Today, the vehicle was leaving the city’s tourist area of Bávaro and heading towards the island of Saona – the vehicle also reported four of the injured. The tourists had to amputate their limbs due to injury.
A truck would cross the road and force the bus driver into a corner that would cause it to roll over. However, one tourist complains that the driver is driving at high speed, which could be the cause of the accident.
The bus carried around 50 people of various nationalities, including seven Brazilians. A total of 14 Argentines, 11 Chileans, seven Colombians, five Peruvians and two Mexicans were among the passengers.
According to the Argentine newspaper La Nación, the fatal victims were a 33-year-old Argentine woman and another Peruvian national. The nationality of the third death has not yet been determined.
The Dominican Republic Tourism Minister, David Collado, said that the victims visited the health facilities they went to to show support and solidarity.
“We were saddened and appalled by the unfortunate accident of the bus occupied by foreigners this morning. We visited different hospitals where they were transferred to offer our full support and solidarity at this difficult time,” he said on his Twitter account.
Also, according to the news of Dominican Today, Chilean tourist Dominique Esperanza Dreckmann, who was on the bus, said that the driver was speeding at the time of the accident.
He also said that at least four tourists had their limbs amputated. “There were injuries, at least four of them lost their arms, lying on the pavement. There were people who couldn’t even speak Spanish,” he said.
With UOLThe Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported, through the Brazilian Embassy in São Domingos, that it “has knowledge of the case” and “provides consular assistance to Brazilian citizens in accordance with existing international agreements and local legislation.” The agency also said that details about the case will not be shared out of respect for the victims’ right to privacy.
