The former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvadeclared this Friday Against abortion during a visit to a city in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, where he took a walk with his eyes fixed on the ballot he will dispute with current president Jair Bolsonaro.
“I am against abortion. I am the father of 5 children, the grandfather of 8 grandchildren, the great-grandfather of a great-granddaughter … After all, who decides whether to abort or not is the woman, who says if she wants or doesn’t want to “, she assured her.
“The law exists, the law determines how abortion can take place. This is not the role of the President of the Republic, This is the role of the legislative power“, she remarked despite the fact that her group, the Workers’ Party (PT) has defended legislation that seeks to expand the right to terminate pregnancy.
Abortion is not legal in Brazil. It is only allowed in two cases: when pregnancy is the result of rape or when the life of the pregnant woman is at risk. In 2012, the Federal Court (STF) ruled that abortion can be performed even when the fetus is anencephalic and cannot survive.
The PT candidate appears to have changed his discourse on abortion by following a campaign strategy to improve their approval in the evangelical electorate, where he runs at a disadvantage against Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party (PL).
In fact, it was Bolsonaro himself who came out to respond, via Twitter, to the statements of his opponent. “Lula now tries to say that he is against abortion, despite being supported by those who defend him; that he is a Christian, despite being supported by those who hate the church; that he is against drugs, being supported by those in favor; who is against corruption, while he and his gang were arrested for it”, Wrote the president.
“The left claims to be proud of its flags, but hides them in an election year. They know if they tell the truth about what they preach, they will never be accepted, that’s why they lie about what they feel. They could be honest and let the people decide, but greed and ambition speak louder, ”she continued.
“There is nothing more shameful than defending an idea that is contrary to everything you believe in just to be accepted. It is the worst sign for a leader. After all, those who, through power, manage to put aside their own values, will never raise a finger to defend those of a nation ”, he concluded.
The runoff of October 30 is approaching and the campaign continues. In this context, the former president took a walking tour in the center of Guarulhos, a municipality in Greater Sao Paulo, where he criticized Bolsonaro for his policy against the coronavirus pandemic.
“This country cannot vote for one person which did not shed a tear for the 680,000 people who died of Covidhe (for Bolsonaro) could have saved 400,000 lives, delayed the purchase of vaccines, which is why we have to get it out“of the government, raised Lula.
