Regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said in an online post Friday that Ukrainian authorities had found a mass grave in the recently liberated town of Lyman in the eastern part of the country, and it was unclear how many bodies were found.

Separately, the Ukrinform news agency reported that a senior police official said 180 bodies were found in the tomb. Ukrainian troops recaptured Lyman in the Donetsk region from Russian control on Saturday.

Ukrainian officials regularly accuse Russian troops of committing atrocities in the occupied territories, which Moscow denies.

Last month, the bodies of 436 people were exhumed from a burial site in the northeastern city of Izium after they were released. Local officials said many suffered violent deaths.

Donetsk governor Kyrylenko wrote to Telegram that authorities in Lyman “found a mass grave where, according to local information, there could be soldiers and civilians. The exact number has not yet been determined.”

He said there was also a second burial ground with 200 graves containing the bodies of civilians. It was unclear from their comments how and when they died.
