The 11.5-carat pink diamond stone was auctioned for US$49.9 million.
The unidentified buyer spent more than BRL 22.5 million per carat, the largest match in history.
Stone was born in 1947 to Queen Elizabeth II. It was named the “Pink Star of Williamston” after another pink diamond presented to Elizabeth at her wedding.
The diamond was discovered at the Williamson mine in Tanzania, where the diamond presented to the Queen was found, and was auctioned off by Sotheby’s in Hong Kong.
The initial value of the auction house was estimated at US$21 million (equivalent to R$109 million), but the final purchase was almost double the estimates.
Diamond expert Tobias Kormind, founder of 77 Diamonds, said the jewel’s connection to the British monarchy may have added value to the piece.
“This result demonstrates the durability of high-quality diamonds in a troubled economy,” he said in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian.
