NEW YORK (Reuters) – The White House said on Sunday it would continue to arm Ukraine, but declined to comment more directly about an explosion that damaged the road and rail bridge connecting Russia and Crimea.

“We have nothing more to add to the bridge burst,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby told ABC’s This Week. “What I can say is Mr Putin started this war and Mr Putin can end it today by withdrawing his troops from the country.”

Kirby said both sides should find a way to negotiate to end the war, but Putin was not interested in doing so.

“On the contrary,” he added. “By calling in hundreds of thousands of reservists, annexing them politically, or at least attempting to annex four regions of Ukraine, he showed every sign of doubling his bet,” Kirby said.

Therefore, Kirby said, “Obviously, we are in contact with Ukrainians almost daily and will continue to provide security assistance.”

Reflecting widely the comments of the White House last week after US President Joe Biden referred to the possibility of a nuclear “Armageddon”, Kirby said there was no indication that the US had made the decision to use nuclear weapons, and that the US was trying to change its strategic stance. He said there was no reason. In this context.

“The president was reflecting the very high risks that are now at stake when you have a modern nuclear power and the leader of that modern nuclear power was willing to use irresponsible rhetoric like Putin did…” Kirby said.
