At least 22 people were killed and 52 missing in a landslide in Las Tejerías, an industrial city in central Venezuela, the government said on Sunday.
“We have already found 22 bodies and more than 52 are missing. We are now mobilizing a fundamental search front for these people,” said Vice President Delcy Rodriguez at the disaster site.
The AFP team went to Las Tejerías and saw the destruction of homes and commercial establishments.
Admiral Remigio Ceballos Ichaso, Minister of the Interior and Justice, who went to the scene to confirm the damage, told AFP that about 1,000 workers participated in the rescue efforts.
“The city is over. Las Tejerías is over,” complained 55-year-old Carmen Meléndez, a resident of the town, about 50 km from the capital Caracas.
