Century-old bridge over river collapses in India, 60 dead

A bridge over the Machchhu River in Morbi, India, with a history of more than 100 years, collapsed today with hundreds of people collapsing on its roof. According to Indian officials, 60 people have died so far. The information was confirmed by Gujarat Panchayat minister Brijesh Merja.

According to the Indian newspaper The Times of India, eyewitnesses reported that many women and children were on the bridge when it broke. Dozens of people are reported to have been injured.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu took to Twitter to mourn the tragedy.

Built during the British Empire days, the bridge was reopened this week after months of maintenance work.

The country’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, announced compensation for the families of the victims.

“The Prime Minister spoke with the Gujarat police and other agencies in the region about the accident in Morbi. He called for urgent mobilization of teams for rescue operations. He asked for close and continuous monitoring of the situation and gave all assistance possible for those affected,” Modi said in a post on his Twitter profile.
