A man found a mouse resembling the size of a human baby in the garden of his home in Blackburn, England.
According to the British Daily Star, the discovery yesterday came as a shock to 82-year-old Derek Blamire, who has been battling rats on his property for a long time. The pensioner has already claimed to have caught several rodents.
“I’ve been living here for about seven years and I’ve caught over 50 mice. Sometimes I poison them or catch them in a trap. If they keep coming, I’ll keep catching them. I won’t give up,” Blamire promised.
But the owner did not expect to find a mouse that reaches about 46 cm in length – on average, a human baby is born at 48 cm. In an image shared on social media, Derek is seen holding a giant garbage collector mouse by his neck.
The animal’s measurements impressed its neighbors. Some compared the size of a mouse to that of a dog, while others claimed that its length was equivalent to that of a baby.
Derek Blamire believes that rats often appear because they have to live on vacant lots near his property. They are attracted to the food you leave for the birds in the garden. Despite this, the British used this situation to their advantage to capture the invaders.
“I keep the birds that come out every day in the garden, and there will obviously be rats. They reproduce very quickly, there are small ones, there are young ones, there are old ones. The young are easy to catch, but most of the old ones are very smart, they don’t get trapped easily and they don’t eat the poison either. I’m lucky to have caught one though.”
For his strategy to work, he temporarily stops feeding the birds, so the mice starve and start taking risks with the trap.
“I stop feeding the birds for a week so the mice go a little hungry so it’s easier to catch them,” he said. “I haven’t seen any of them for a few days, but they will come back. They can disappear for a few weeks and then suddenly come back.”
