Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday on his victory in the Brazilian presidential election, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
“I attach great importance to the development of China-Brazil relations,” Xi said.
“I am ready to work with newly elected President Lula from a strategic and long-term perspective to jointly plan and take the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Brazil to a new level for the benefit of both countries and their peoples.”
Relations between China and Brazil have deteriorated under the government of President Jair Bolsonaro, who was defeated in Sunday’s runoff.
Elected for a third term, Lula led Brazil in 2009 to the first BRICS group, which initially consisted of Brazil, Russia, India and China, before South Africa joined in 2010.
Last year, Lula praised China and its response to the Covid-19 pandemic in an interview with a Chinese media outlet.
