South Korean investigators were examining footage from more than 50 government and private closed-circuit television cameras as well as social media on Monday, seeking answers to how a riot at a Halloween party left so many dead.
With the start of a week of mourning in the country, the death toll rose to 154. 149 people were injured, 33 of them seriously. Among the dead are at least 26 citizens from 14 countries.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol called for a full investigation, and officials said they were focused on rebuilding the uprising and seeing if anyone who triggered the crushing was responsible.
“We are analyzing the security cameras to find the exact cause of the accident,” Police Chief Inspector Nam Gu-jun told reporters.
“We will continue to question more witnesses, including employees at nearby stores.”
Tens of thousands of costumed revelers, most of them teenagers and in their 20s, filled the narrow streets and alleys of the trendy Itaewon neighborhood on Saturday for the first Halloween festivities virtually limitless in three years.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who heads a task force team dealing with the accident, said the victims’ identities were nearly complete and funeral preparations could move forward, pledging support to the victims’ families.
