French President Emmanuel Macron wasted no time, and hours after the Brazilian elections, he called the elected President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. In an excerpt from the Frenchman’s conversation published on his social networks, Macron did not hesitate to state that he wanted to open a new stage in bilateral relations.
Among Brazilian diplomats, the phrase Macron chose for his release was a message to current president Jair Bolsonaro that Paris is waiting for the end of his government to restart relations with Brazil.
In the published excerpt, Macron can be heard saying:
“How are you? Congratulations.”
Lula replied in a serious tone.
“We are living a very happy day. We succeeded in saving democracy,” he said.
In another passage, Macron makes a kind of confession. “I must say I look forward to this moment so that we can restart the strategic partnership at the level of our history and the challenges ahead,” he said.
“It’s tremendous news for us[the election result],” he said.
The UOL found that in recent months, Brazilian diplomats in Paris have faced serious difficulties in getting accepted by the highest echelon of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This came after Bolsonaro underestimated the French chancellor in Brasilia in 2019. He will meet with the President of Brazil. However, minutes before the meeting, the meeting was cancelled. Bolsonaro would cut his hair alive a few minutes later in a gesture that sparked a diplomatic crisis between the two countries.
The situation became more tense when Bolsonaro backed a follower who criticized the appearance of Macron’s wife.
The French responded harshly months later by taking the cacique Raoní and later Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
A year ago, during the G20 summit in Rome, the UOL report asked Macron how he evaluated the relationship between France and Brazil at that moment. “We’ve had better times,” he replied after a long silence.
