Mongolian Oleg Tinkov, founder of internet bank Tinkoff, announced on Monday that he had renounced his Russian citizenship due to the conflict in Ukraine, which he had previously criticized.
“I have decided to renounce my Russian citizenship. I cannot and do not want to be associated with a fascist country that wages war with its peaceful neighbor and kills innocent people every day,” Tinkov wrote on Instagram.
“I hope other top-notch Russian businessmen will follow my example to weaken the regime of the regime. [Vladimir] Get Putin and his economy and his failure,” he said.
Tinkov attached a photo of a certificate from the Russian consulate confirming that he had terminated his Russian citizenship in his message.
“I hate Putin’s Russia, but I love all Russians who are openly opposed to this sick war!”
Tinkov is the founder of the fast-growing Tinkoff Bank. In 2020, it claimed to be Russia’s third-largest retail bank, after public giants Sberbank and VTB. Currently, it claims to have around 20 million customers.
In April, he fiercely criticized the Russian offensive in Ukraine, calling it “absurd” and urging Westerners to put an end to this “massacre”.
In 2020, at the request of the USA, he was arrested in London on charges of tax evasion. He was later released on bail.
In the same year, Tinkoff resigned from his position as general manager, distracted from his founder’s statements against the Russian attack.
