The Molinette hospital in northern Turin announced on Tuesday that it had successfully operated on a young Italian woman with a 70-pound tumor in her abdomen.
The tumor originating from the ovary blocked the patient’s abdomen and prevented him from breathing normally as it put pressure on his lungs.
“There is no precedent for such a large tumor mass in the medical literature. It was heavier than the patient himself,” the facility said in a statement.
The young woman, whose condition was critical, came to the emergency room of Molinette Hospital and needed to be intubated. She was also placed on assisted breathing.
Surgeons first drained 52 liters of fluid and then removed the 25-pound solid portion of the tumor.
The patient was taken to the intensive care unit, where he recovered quickly, and was transferred to a nutrition unit four days later. He was discharged shortly after.
