A man who won 220 million yuan in a lottery in Guangxi, China, came to receive the costumed prize because he didn’t want to be recognized by his family.
According to local media, he kept the victory secret even from his wife and son.
The man, identified only as “Li” by the Nanning Evening News, had purchased 40 tickets, all of the same number, and spelled all seven numbers correctly, earning him 5.48 million (equivalent to R$3.85 million) for each ticket.
The drawing was held on October 21, and on October 24, he went to the Guangxi Lottery Distribution Center to receive the prize.
The man took a train trip to collect the award and stayed in a hotel for the weekend.
“I slept in the hotel for two days and didn’t even leave my room because I didn’t want to lose my tickets,” he said.
The mystery winner donated 5 million yuan (approximately R$ 3.5 million) to the local charity. In addition to the donation, he took home 171 million yuan, paying a fee of 43 million yuan.
Li still does not know what to do with the money, but does not intend to tell his family about the victory. “I didn’t tell my wife or son. I’m afraid they will feel superior to other people and will neither study nor work in the future,” he said.
