This Wednesday, about 20 Brazilians protested outside UN headquarters in Geneva, denouncing an alleged “fraud” in the Brazilian election and calling for “military action”.
Even Jair Bolsonaro’s foreign allies recognized Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory, while the TSE (Supreme Electoral Court) and foreign observers ensured that the Brazilian election process did not show any irregularities.
Voices in the country, such as Hamilton Mourão, former vice president, pointed out that the election process is over.
But for these Brazilians, the alleged fraud took place. Carrying banners calling for “federal intervention” and “army now”, the group donned Brazilian team shirts in front of the building of a formation warning of possible interference in the Brazilian electoral process.
While speaking to the UOL report, protesters still insisted on attacking TSE’s alleged media censorship and actions that “silencing journalists”.
One of them said, “We want military intervention. It is not fair for the people to be victimized by an illegal election.” “We want the armed forces to intervene,” he said.
When asked why he was holding the protest in front of the UN, he said they wanted the side to be “really neutral” and “give this support to the Brazilian people who want transparency”.
“The UN has the power to intervene with force acting against the Brazilian population,” said one of the group members.
When asked about the fact that the UN has spent the last four years denouncing Bolsonaro’s human rights violations, Brazilians questioned what was being condemned. One of them asked, “Is this criticism justified or is it press activism?” she asked.
Since 2019, the UN has condemned government-instigated violence, election campaign disinformation, attacks on indigenous peoples, shrinking civilian space, threats to journalists, Bolsonaro’s climate denial, and dozens of other issues.
Two months ago, then-UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet was still criticizing Bolsonaro for his attacks on the TSE.
The UN was the target of fierce attacks by members of Bolsonaro’s government, who accused the entity of being left-wing, advocating an international agenda contrary to sovereignty and advocating a so-called “globalism”.
Asked about Bolsonaro’s speech on Tuesday, the group praised the president. They said, “A great head of state who knows how to respect the constitution. He respects democracy.”
For one of them, “there is a dictatorship on the left that silences journalists and uses the public machinery in favor of a former president”.
When asked that Switzerland already recognizes the Brazilian electoral process, the explanation was different. According to them, the blame lies with the press, which “shows Lula’s innocence.”
So when asked whether the Swiss government had been deceived by the press, the answer was clear: “absolutely”.
