Richard Austin, an expert on manuscripts and antiques at the New York auction house, told AFP that he “wanted another person or group to be responsible for the preservation of this crucial document.”

He expects the document to fetch $20-30 million on sale on December 13 at the earliest. It will be on display at the auction house from November 4th.

According to Sotheby’s, owned by Franco-Israeli millionaire Patrick Drahi, only 13 copies of the first edition of the US Constitution are known. An estimated 500 were printed at the time.

11 out of 13 are in institutions or museums, two are in private hands.

Sold a year ago and owned by American collector Dorothy Tapper Goldman, the copy was bought by millionaire Kenneth Griffin for $43.2 million to loan it free to an Arkansas museum.
