US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that the threat that some Republican candidates would not accept the November 8 election results if they lost was a threat to democracy and accused former President Donald Trump of inspiring them.

“Make no mistake, democracy is in the ballot box for all of us,” Biden said in a speech a few days before Americans decided whether the Democrats would keep control of the Senate and House of Representatives or hand over power to the Republicans.

Speaking at Union Station, Washington, not far from the Capitol, Biden used the hammer attack of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, at his San Francisco home as proof that democracy is on the way. January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

“The attacker broke into the house, ‘Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?’ “These were the same words used by the mob when they attacked the US Capitol on January 6,” Biden said.

He urged voters to “think well about the moment we are in”.

“As we stand here today, there are candidates at all levels in the United States — governor, Congress, attorney general — who are not determined to accept the election results,” he said.

Biden said those who threatened not to accept the election result were inspired by Trump, who weighed his 2024 presidential bid as he tried to decide whether Biden wanted another four-year term.

“American democracy is under attack,” Biden said, due to Trump’s refusal to accept the 2020 election results, which he lost to Biden.

“He refuses to accept the will of the people, he refuses to accept that he has lost,” Biden said.

Separately, former President Barack Obama also voiced his concerns about democracy.

Speaking at a Democratic rally for state candidates in Arizona on Wednesday night, Obama recalled the age-old steps to ensure women, African Americans and others who are marginalized can participate in a democracy he says are now at risk.

Biden, who campaigned for the Democrats with Obama in the last few days before the midterm elections next Tuesday, faces the prospect of Republicans taking control of Congress.

While most predictions suggest that Republicans should take control of the House, the Senate is in doubt.
