Indian police said on Thursday they found the body of a man locked in a toilet on a train traveling 900 kilometers across the country.
The man is suspected to have boarded the train days before leaving the state of Bihar and died in the toilet after locking the door.
Ram Sahay, a railway police officer, told AFP the door was forced open on Sunday after passengers complained of the smell.
At the time of the discovery, the train traveled for about 24 hours and traveled for a total of 35 hours.
“We still don’t know anything about the man,” said Sahay, who lives in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh state, where the body was found.
“He probably got on the train when it was stopped and died two or three days before he was found.”
Sanjay Rai, a doctor at the railway hospital, told The Times of India that the man “died after falling into a possible coma.”
Authorities distributed posters of the man around Bihar station.
Tens of thousands of corpses go unclaimed and unidentified every year in India. They are usually burned by the police three days after they try to find the relatives or friends of the deceased.
