Two ecological activists stick their hands on paintings by painter Francisco Goya, which are on display at the Pradro Museum in Madrid this Saturday (5th). On the eve of the COP27 meeting, activists used the protest to denounce governments’ inaction in the face of global warming.

A video released by the Futuro Vegetal group shows the moment when militants wrote “+1.5°C” on the wall of the museum between two paintings by the Spanish artist, referring to the global warming target set by the international community.

A museum employee tried to prevent them from recording the activists by sticking their hands on the frames of the paintings “A Maja Nua” and “Dressed A Maja”.

Environmental group Extinction Rebellion, a supporter of civil disobedience, sent out a press release saying it was “a protest” against “a rise in global temperature that will cause an unstable climate with serious consequences across the planet”.

According to the Spanish police, the paintings were not damaged and the militants were arrested and detained.

Today’s protest follows a series of actions targeting famous works of art in museums across Europe. Earlier this month, two activists from the “Last Generation” group threw mashed potatoes into the glass protecting Claude Monet’s “Palheiros” (“Les Meules”) at the Barberini Museum in Germany.

Environmental activists also glued themselves to the glass protecting Johannes Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ in a museum in the Netherlands. Other militants poured soup into the glass preserving Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ at the National Gallery in London.

Last Friday (4), another painting by Van Gogh, this time in Rome, was the target of a protest with soup on the glass that protected it.
