Vatican, November 6 (ANSA) – Pope Francis said on Sunday, on his return flight from Bahrain, “machismo kills humanity”.
The statement was given by the Catholic leader after questions from journalists accompanying his papal entourage about women’s rights protests in Iran.
Francis did not comment specifically on the crisis in the Iranian country, but said in general that “a society that cannot put women in their place cannot move forward”.
“We have to keep fighting for women because they are a gift. God created man and then gave him a little dog to have fun with. No, he made man and woman equal,” he said.
Then Jorge Bergoglio realized he came from an Argentine “macho folk”. “This is bad but then we call out to the mothers who solved the problem. This machismo is killing humanity, we need women to help us change in society,” she added.
The Pope also reminded that the Catholic Church is giving more space to women, though he had previously rejected offers to appoint deacons. A society that removes women from public life is a society that impoverishes itself.
