Aerial footage captured the moment when a bird unleashed a flurry of feces towards a great white shark to ward off any predator trying to attack it. Images shared on Youtube by Carlos Gauna, a photographer and drone pilot in California, showed the moment the jet passed through the water towards the other animal.
The “smoke screen” that gained a “heroic” reputation on social media, where the video shot at sea in the United States was watched more than 600,000 times in four days, worked and was enough for potential prey to escape.
The bird was described by the video’s owner as a cormorant, or cormorant, a waterfowl that, unlike other marine species, does not have the so-called “uropygial gland” to waterproof its wings.
“The cormorant can’t fly like other birds,” said Carlos, describing the video.
“This is because its wings are not waterproof, which makes it easier to dive in search of fish, but it can do scenes like this. [de perseguição por outros predadores] much more common,” he explained, noting that sea hunting is part of the diet of these birds.
In a description of the footage, the American said the encounter between the animals was “one of the funniest encounters he has ever witnessed.”
“The bird uses a very interesting defense mechanism,” he added.
