The traditional lottery game Powerball in the United States has surpassed its own record, with accumulated prizes of US$1.9 billion (almost R$10 billion at current price). Although the game takes place abroad, Brazilians wishing to participate in the draw can place bets online at special sites.
The award is notable for breaking its largest record, with US$1.586 billion in January 2016. At the time, the money was split between three players: Chino Hills (California), Mumford (Tennessee) and Melbourne Beach (Florida).
The draw works with 5 main numbers from 69 white balls and a number called Powerball drawn from one of 26 red balls. To take home the jackpot, it is necessary to hit at least one red ball on the bet. If a player matches all six numbers, they win the jackpot. In the United States, each ticket costs US$2 (approximately R$10).
To bet directly from Brazil, specialized sites facilitate the process of bookmakers. One of them is TheLotter, a worldwide service for buying lottery tickets online. To place a bet, you need to create an account on the platform and select “USA Powerball” from the list of available lotteries.
Another option is the Lottoland service, which works as a facilitator for international bets. However, in February of this year, the platform was investigated by Procon in Rio de Janeiro.
On this occasion, the public agency stated that “it has been observed that the consumer does not receive official evidence of the performance of the games, and this will prevent them from receiving a final award unless this is done effectively”. Despite the investigation, the betting site reports that “payment of any prize” through the platform is guaranteed, “even those in excess of 1 billion reals”.
The Powerball winner draw will be held this Tuesday (8) at 0:59 Brazilian time.
