The moment when a woman had to be rescued with a rope from the 20th floor of a house that caught fire on Saturday (5) in New York was recorded by the residents.
Firefighters were caught on camera helping residents escape the flames in upper-floor apartments on East 52nd Street in Manhattan. More than 30 people were injured, including five firefighters, the New York Times reported.
The images went viral on Twitter. The New York Fire Department praised the agents who used rope to help the stranded woman.
Firefighter Artur Podgorsk told The New York Times that rescue is a team effort. “My role was to get under the victim and start holding his weight, hold him and bring him down safely. It’s a team job, you have to trust the members above and below you. That’s why we train. It happens in moments like this, there’s no room for error. We get back to training.”
Patti Ryan, who shot the video, wrote on Twitter: “I’ve never seen anything more heroic in my life than what I just witnessed.”
Darren Harsch, one of four firefighters involved in the dramatic rescue, told the newspaper that the use of ropes in rescues is rare. But he stressed that an appeal was necessary.
“This is an extremely rare type of recovery. We don’t do that often.”
According to New York Presbyterian Hospital, 34 patients were hospitalized Sunday night and 28 were discharged.
Emergency services believe the cause of the fire was a lithium-ion battery attached to a bicycle.
