An extraordinary 18.18-carat gem, the ‘Fortune Pink’ diamond was sold to an Asian collector for US$28.5 million Tuesday (8), following an auction in Geneva.
Auction house Christie’s said the jewelery is the largest pear-shaped diamond in this shade of pink ever sold at auction.
It was mounted on a ring surrounded by large white diamonds on both sides. It weighs exactly 18.18 carats, a number considered affordable in Asia, according to the auction house.
Diamond brought in 24.5 million Swiss francs (US$24.615 million), which together with fees came to 28.4 million Swiss francs (US$28.5 million).
The auction lasted four minutes and started at 17 million Swiss Francs, and there was contention between the three bidders who had joined by phone.
Eventually, the buyer took control of the piece, increasing the bid by half a million dollars.
