London – The German Nature Photography Association presented the winners of its annual competition this week with a selection of photos of animals, plants and landscapes taken by professionals and amateurs from various countries.
The GDT Photo of the Year award went to 23-year-old German biology student Thomas Hempelmann.
At The Florist, he painted the kestrel, a bird of prey with a sharp beak for catching its prey, in contrast with the delicate flowers of the forest.
The best nature photos in seven categories
The competition received more than 6,400 photos and awarded the best nature photos in seven categories: Birds, Mammals, Other Animals, Plants and Fungi, Nature Studio, Landscapes, and 2022 Tree of the Year.
Nature Photographer of the Year winner Thomas Hempelmann is 23 years old and studies ecology and environmental protection in Greifswald in northern Germany.
Interested in bird life since childhood, the artist started taking photographs to record birdwatching and eventually became an experienced nature photographer.
The image of the kestrel was obtained almost by accident after an unsuccessful photographic journey.
Hempelmann said he saw the kestrel on a pole on his way home with the equipment he kept in his backpack, but decided to stop the trip to photograph it.
And the bird of prey flew into the middle of the flowers and for a few seconds, when it was enough for the winning click, received an unexpected gift.
“I finished the day in a few seconds and came home whistling with happiness,” the young photographer said.
