US President Joe Biden this Wednesday (9) answered a question about the possibility that Twitter’s acquisition by the mogul could pose a threat to national security, saying Elon Musk’s ties to foreign countries “deserves scrutiny.”
“I think Elon Musk’s cooperation and/or technical links with other countries are worth examining,” the president said at a press conference.
“Whether he does anything inappropriate or not, I’m not suggesting… That’s all I have to say,” he added.
Last month, it was reported that the Biden administration was considering a national security review of Musk’s $44 billion Twitter purchase, in part because of a key investor group backing the purchase.
Investors include Saudi Arabian Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund.
Musk also took a public stance that was seen as pro-Vladimir Putin, notably by repeating the Russian president’s arguments about the conflict, despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The billionaire was also surprised by suggesting that the autonomous island of Taiwan should be part of China; This is a stance welcomed by Chinese officials but deeply angered by Taiwanese officials.
Critics point to Musk’s industrial ties to China, which are increasingly straining ties with Washington.
