US President Joe Biden will seek “an opportunity soon” to meet with Brazil’s elected President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The statement was made this Thursday by US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
Speaking at the White House, Sullivan said he was in contact with senior members of Lula’s team and that they were formulating plans for a face-to-face relationship between the two leaders.
The day after Lula was elected, Biden called the president-elect in Brazil. In addition to congratulating him on the result, Biden also spoke to Lula about the “strength of democratic institutions”, citing fears that the Jair Bolsonaro government would not respect the election result.
During the meeting, which lasted approximately 20 minutes, the two also touched upon the diplomatic relations between the two countries and the difficulties that the two countries will face regarding climate change.
While former US President Donald Trump publicly supports the re-election of Jair Bolsonaro, other US and international leaders enthusiastically accepted Lula’s victory????????
On the second day of COP27 (the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference), Bolsonaro was indirectly criticized in a speech by environmentalist Al Gore, the former US vice president. Speaking at the event, he said that Brazil “chosen to stop destroying Amazon”, referring to Lula’s election.
Since the end of the elections, many international leaders have congratulated the PT on its unprecedented third term and signaled their willingness to maintain or strengthen trade, bilateral and diplomatic relations.
Even on the second tour day, there were several posts on Twitter and other social networks mentioning Lula. From Russian President Vladimir Putin to Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who commanded against Russian troops advancing into Ukraine, to the Chinese embassy in Brazil, the election results were quickly recognized internationally.
