Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he was aware of the alleged illegal tax practices at the real estate company, during a statement from a senior executive of the company Thursday during the Trump Organization’s criminal trial on tax fraud charges.

A Manhattan prosecutor asked Jeffrey McConney, the company’s controller, if his former chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, had told him that he and Trump were discussing lowering Weisselberg’s taxable salary to offset his rent payments. .

McConney said he didn’t remember at first, but after the grand jury’s statement on the matter was released, he said, “That’s what Allen told me, yes.”

In 2021, the Trump Organization was accused by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office of illegally awarding executive benefits for more than 15 years without notifying tax authorities and falsely reporting the bonuses as non-employee compensation.

The company that operates hotels, golf courses and other real estate worldwide can be fined up to $1.6 million if found guilty. Trump was not charged, but denied any misconduct and said he was targeted for political reasons.
