Two elderly pilots, one aged 80 and the other 77, died in a collision between the small plane and the glider they were piloting yesterday in Australia. According to Queensland Police, they landed in a rural area in the Gympie area.
Emergency teams were sent to the accident site at around 15.00 yesterday (10). Police said the pilots were the only people on board, according to the British newspaper The Guardian. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
The glider has left a local glider club, but it is unknown where the ultralight aircraft came from.
Queensland Police Superintendent Brad Inskip said: “It’s a gruesome scene, it’s a terrible event, it’s horrific for the family and frankly for those involved.” “It’s a small regional glider club, everybody knows each other, so it’s going to impact the community a lot.”
The Queensland Forensic Accident Unit is investigating the circumstances of the accident and a cause of death report is prepared by the coroner. Authorities still do not know how the two planes collided.
