Four people were hospitalized after gunfire near a university in Montreal, Canada, on Friday, 11th, police said.
Canadian police spokesman Geneviève Major told AFP that the shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. (19:30 GMT) in a park across from Collège Montmorency in the Montreal suburb of Laval.
The 4 people hit by the bullets took shelter in the college and were then transferred to the hospital. None of them are serious.
The institution, which is home to about 10,000 students and staff, remained closed until late at night as police searched the area for the attacker.
Major Stephane Boyer said on Twitter that a police operation is “in progress”, while television footage shows parents of students clustered around the college.
A 19-year-old man, who previously wore a bulletproof vest, was arrested at a high school 40km south of Montreal and charged with making threats.
Students and staff at the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu school told local media they were ordered to lock themselves in classrooms with the lights off for most of the day while the police operation continued outside.
Québec Minister of Public Safety, François Bonnardel, said on Twitter that the students were “having a difficult situation today” and will wait for the results of the police investigation “to fully understand what happened”.
Quebec Prime Minister François Legault also used social media to demonstrate. He wrote that the shooting near the College Montmorency was disturbing. We will fight tirelessly against gun violence in our streets to keep Québec a safe place.”
