A Democratic senator from Arizona has been re-elected, with just one seat left before President Joe Biden’s party holds a majority in the Senate, US media reported on Friday.

Three television channels have guaranteed that former astronaut Mark Kelly has beaten his Republican rival, Blake Masters, in this southwestern state. His victory brought the number of Democratic senators to 49. There are still two seats left: in Nevada, where the counting continues, and in Georgia, where a second round is scheduled for December 6.

If the two parties each get 50 seats and therefore uphold the status quo, the Democrats will retain control of the Senate, thanks to the vote of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Defeated in Arizona, Blake Masters still hasn’t admitted his failure. On Friday night, former President Donald Trump wrote on his social networks that some election machines were broken in Arizona and the result was “coup and election fraud”. “New choices!” she insisted.

“Republican Wave”

The long-awaited “republican wave” by its supporters did not materialize in the midterm elections, and although the exact results are not yet known, the Democrats seem to have managed to contain the damage.

Days after the vote on Tuesday (8), the control of the US Congress remains uncertain. Republicans looked at the route to gain a majority in the House of Representatives, but were still missing seven seats.
