Cameras installed on a lake in Italy recorded an impressive retreat of the glacier over the past four years, highlighting a meltdown described as “scary” by the Lombard Glaciological Service.
Commenting on the video accompanying the meltdown in the summer of this year to the Italian newspaper Il Dolomiti, experts said, “It is not easy to find adjectives to describe what happened in the last four months.”
“It is true that records are more easily broken in a climate regime with increasing temperatures, but the hydrological year 2021-2022 passed beyond what we expected,” the team said. Visualize melting in the glacier zone with pictures.
“A new time-lapse camera – an effect that produces images faster – was installed on Fellaria (glacier) at the end of June and was able to effectively show the effects of the climate crisis. The lake in 2019 had the right to monitor changes on a multi-year scale as the glacier gradually shrinks,” he said.
According to the Glaciological Service, the glacier’s thickness has decreased by about 26 meters in the last four years – that is, in 16 months as thinning only occurs in summer.
