Iran’s security forces in the Middle East have killed at least 326 people since protests erupted across the country two months ago.
The number update (12) made yesterday includes 43 children and 25 women, the “absolute minimum” in the words of the NGO reproduced by American CNN. The organization claims to have recorded deaths in 22 provinces, primarily in Sistan, Balochistan, Tehran, Mazandaran, Kurdistan and Gilan.
Why is Iran protesting? Iran is facing one of its biggest opposition demonstrations since September, when Iranian ethnic Kurdish Mahsa Amini, 22, was killed, who was arrested by the Iranian morality police for allegedly not wearing a headscarf on Muslim women.
Public anger over his death was compounded by a series of complaints against the Iranian regime for suppressing the ongoing demonstrations despite the judiciary’s advice to “show no mercy” to the demonstrators.
Celebrities support the protests. Despite the deaths and arrests, Iranian celebrities and athletes have supported anti-government demonstrations in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, IHRNGO urged the international community to take “definitive measures” against the rising death toll. The NGO asked the UN to hold Islamic Republic officials accountable for “serious human rights violations”.
“The establishment of an international investigation mechanism by the UN will facilitate the accountability of those involved and increase the cost of continued repression,” said IHRNGO director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam.
On Friday, 11, United Nations representatives urged Iranian authorities to stop “using the death penalty as a tool to quell protests”.
