The governments of the United States, Japan and South Korea on Sunday (13) promised a “strong and decisive” response to any nuclear test by Pyongyang.
The leaders of the three countries issued a joint statement after the tripartite meeting in Cambodia. In it, US President Joe Biden promised to mobilize “all capabilities, including nuclear ones,” to defend his allies.
Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol “reaffirmed that there will be a strong and definitive response from the international community following the North Korean nuclear test.”
The note states that the three countries will “work together to strengthen their deterrence capacity”.
North Korea launched a series of launches, including a ballistic missile that landed near South Korean territorial waters in early November. In October, another North Korean ballistic missile flew over Japan.
Pyongyang justified its actions with the “aggressive and provocative” attitude of Seoul and Washington, which also carried out the largest air military maneuvers in its history.
On Monday, 14, Biden will meet with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Bali, parallel to the G20 summit, to ask him to persuade Pyongyang not to go any further.
