Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who led the November 1 legislative election, was formally nominated on Sunday (13) to form the government.

“I authorize you to form the government,” Israeli President Isaac Herzog said at a press conference in Jerusalem with Netanyahu.

Victory. Netanyahu won with the support of 64 of the 120 elected deputies. Yair Lapid, the current prime minister and leading the Executive before the elections, won the votes of 28 deputies, while 28 deputies will not name any names.

From today, the leader of the Likud (Israeli parliament) will have 28 days to form a new alliance. In case of difficulty, the chairman may request an additional 14 days in a request that must be accepted by Herzog.

Return to power. Netanyahu was Israeli prime minister from 2009 to 2021. He left power last year after Lapid managed to forge a broad alliance that brought together both left and right parties.

The Israelis went to the polls for the fifth time in just over three and a half years, until they won the political bloc supporting Netanyahu on 1 November.

The surprise, however, was the 14 seats won by the far-right Otzma Yehudit party of leader Itamar Ben Gvir, known for his speeches against the Arab presence in Israel.

The other five seats went to the left-wing secular Arab group Hadash Taal. The two Arab acronyms that always have seats in parliament have not crossed the 3.25% barrier and will be excluded from the legislature: the religious left Meretz and the nationalist Balad.
