The leading economies of the G20 this Sunday (13) announced the creation of a US$1.4 billion fund to prepare for future outbreaks, ahead of their summit in Indonesia; this amount was deemed insufficient by the host country of the meeting.

Indonesian President Joko Wikodo announced at a press conference that the purpose of the fund, which is attended by 24 countries, is “to avoid and prepare for a pandemic”.

“But that’s not enough,” said Widodo, estimating the need for $31 billion.

“We must ensure that society can withstand a pandemic. A pandemic cannot cost lives and break the joints of the world economy.”

This fund was initiated by the health and finance ministers of the G20 countries in the presence of WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and World Bank President David Malpass.

It is considered one of the rare developments to be expected in the context of the G20 summit, which started on the paradise island of Bali on Tuesday and was marked by deep divisions over the war in Ukraine.
