Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the recently liberated city of Kherson from Russian troops on Monday, 14 (14), and said that the withdrawal of the invaders was “the beginning of the end of the war”.
Located in the south of Ukraine and in the capital of a province of the same name, Kherson had been under Russian rule since the beginning of the conflict and was illegally annexed by Moscow in October, but was re-conquered by the Kyiv Army last week.
“This is the beginning of the end of the war,” said Zelenskiy, who attended the ceremony of raising the Ukrainian flag at the regional government headquarters.
The President also distributed medals to the soldiers and posed for a souvenir photo with the soldiers. “We are ready for peace,” he added.
In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “Kherson is the territory of the Russian Federation.”
The reconquest of this important city on the banks of the Dnieper River is one of Ukraine’s greatest victories against Moscow, which just six weeks ago announced the annexation of Kherson and three other provinces (Donetsk, Lugansk and Zaporizhzhia).
Russia’s withdrawal embarrassed the regime of Vladimir Putin, who at the beginning of the conflict quickly planned to take Kiev and overthrow Zelensky.
