He burned himself alive to save his 8-year-old granddaughter

That kind of life-and-death decision had to be made in a terrifying moment by a young man from Washington state who she ran into a burning house to save her 8-year-old granddaughter.

The story, which took place three years ago, has gone viral again in recent days.

The heroic British man of 20, Derrick Byrd, he suffered varying degrees of burns in 2019 after rescuing his grandchildren from a fire that broke out in their Washington home.

It all happened at the Byrd family home in Aberdeen, Washington, USA. After the fire broke out in the house, two of the grandsons jumped from the second floor and were “cut off” by Derrick, who was on the ground floor.

But the youngest granddaughter was afraid and did not dare to jump out the window. So the man did not hesitate and entered the house which was consumed by flames.

The eight-year-old girl was on the floor of a room covered in thick black smoke. The uncle caught up with the girl, covered her with his shirt and ran down the floors and into the flames. “She was screaming my name, so I wasn’t going to leave her there. I could feel the fire burning through my body.”

After, Derric, Mercedes and one of his nephews Junior, They were transferred and placed in a burn institution.

Despite suffering second, third and fourth degree burns, Byrd says he doesn’t regret what happened: “I don’t care if I started burning, I just wanted to save her,” he said at the time. “I’d do it again,” he repeated.
