Donald Trump is expected to announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election on Tuesday, and is ignoring calls from business-loyal Republican candidates to back down amid poor midterm performance.
The Republican billionaire promised a “big announcement” at 9 PM (11 PM Brasilia time) Tuesday at his luxury residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
Deputy Jason Miller promised a “very professional, very formal” statement, but the former president is expected to be surrounded by a “marked” group of supporters.
But Trump is unpredictable and may change his mind at the last minute.
Delaying the announcement, as some of his aides suggested, would be deceptive, considering it boasted of being “perhaps the most important speech ever made in the history of the United States.”
Trump left Washington after his supporters stormed the Capitol. But he chose to stay in the political arena and continue to raise funds and hold rallies around the country.
Ahead of the November 8 midterm elections, Trump seemed determined to take advantage of the predicted defeat of the Democrats and the overwhelming success of the Republicans to return with victory.
But the red wave, the color of Republicans trusted by conservatives, did not.
Democrats are in control of the Senate, and while Republicans will likely regain control of the House of Representatives, it will be by a smaller margin than they think.
These disappointing results, especially the results of some of the candidates Trump supports, overshadow his presidential plans. Influential republican voices even urged him to resign as party leader.
Duel in Florida?
Some conservatives are betting on another possible candidate for the White House: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, 44.
The new far-right star emerged from the midterms empowered and warned that his fight was “just getting started”.
Currently, Trump enjoys undeniable popularity among the grassroots, and polls continue to show him as the winner in the Republican primaries.
But the former president’s numerous legal problems threaten his return to the American Presidency.
Trump is the subject of many investigations due to his role in the attack on Congressional headquarters on January 6, 2021, and for managing the White House archives, among others.
But he knows, following his usual “instinct”, that he has survived all scandals so far and is still standing, despite having been defeated countless times.
